A Very Special “Launch Concert” for Jacqueline Woodson’s New Novel RED AT THE BONE
This past Tuesday saw a unique launch concert for Jacqueline Woodson’s new adult novel, RED AT THE BONE, published by Riverhead on September 17, at Joe’s Pub in Manhattan. The evening began with a private party at The Library at the Public, where Jacqueline hosted guests such as Marlon James, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Cynthia Nixon, and Brit Bennett. Attendees enjoyed a themed cake and stacks of custom-designed RED AT THE BONE broadsides.
As the clock struck 9:30, partygoers made their way down to Joe’s Pub for a sold-out show. Accompanied by members of the illustrious Rootstock Republic and sharing the stage with voice actors from the RED AT THE BONE audiobook, Jacqueline and musician Toshi Reagon alternated exquisite singing and impassioned reading. The performance embraced the musicality of the novel’s narration, as well as specific songs featured in the story itself, and the night closed with the audience joining in on a fierce rendition of De La Soul’s “Me Myself and I.”
