Colson Whitehead will be in conversation with Mary Karr discussing the writing life and Whitehead’s most recent New York Times bestselling book, THE NICKEL BOYS (now available as an Anchor paperback) at a Live Talks Los Angeles virtual event via Facebook Live and You Tube on Tuesday, July 7 at 9:00 pm (ET). In this bravura follow-up to the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award-winning #1 New York Times bestseller, The Underground Railroad, Whitehead’s THE NICKEL BOYS, which won the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, brilliantly dramatizes another strand of American history through the story of two boys sentenced to a hellish reform school in Jim Crow-era Florida. Based on the real story of a reform school that operated for 111 years and warped the lives of thousands of children, this book is a devastating, driven narrative that showcases a great American novelist writing at the height of his powers.

Mary Karr is the author of The Liar’s Club and Cherry, among other books. Her poems and essays have won Pushcart prizes and have appeared in magazines such as The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and Parnassus. She was a Bunting Fellow at Radcliffe College, and is now the Jesse Truesdale Peck Professor of English Literature at Syracuse.
