One World Presents Inaugural Ideas in Action Workshop: Poetic Writing/Editing With Yanyi

One World is proud to announce the Ideas in Action Workshop: an inclusive space to give creatives direct access to our authors, as well as strengthen the trust, resource-sharing, and support between readers and writers. As there are so few writing spaces dedicated to writers of color and marginalized voices, we would like to leverage our unique position as a publisher of books that intentionally change the culture and create community. To this end, Penguin Random House will fully fund this workshop – all attendees will participate free of charge. We will launch this exciting new workshop series with Poetic Writing/Editing with Yanyi in May.
Yanyi comments, “As Toni Morrison once said, ‘If you are free, you need to free somebody else.’ Writing freed me. I’m honored to partner with One World on this workshop to continue that work.”
This virtual poetry manuscript workshop, taught by Yanyi, author of DREAM OF THE DIVIDED FIELD: Poems, is for Asian American poets who need guidance in putting together their debut poetry collections. Over the course of the workshop, each student will have the opportunity to have their 40-80 page manuscript read and critiqued by their fellow poets. There will be five sessions, each taking place on Sundays from 1:00 to 4:00 pm (ET), beginning May 1. The 6th class will be a free public lecture on the making of Dream of the Divided Field and the wisdom Yanyi has gained during the book’s publishing process. The link to apply is here. Yanyi is the author of DREAM OF THE DIVIDED FIELD (One World, March 1, 2022) and The Year of Blue Water (Yale University Press, 2019), winner of the 2018 Yale Series of Younger Poets Prize. His work has been featured in or at NPR’s All Things Considered, New York Public Library, Tin House, Granta, and A Public Space, and he is the recipient of fellowships from Asian American Writers’ Workshop and Poets House. He holds an MFA in Poetry from New York University. He was most recently poetry editor at Foundry. Currently, he teaches creative writing at large and gives creative advice at The Reading.
