The 2022 Art of Eating Prize for Best Food Book of the Year went to Bryant Terry for BLACK FOOD: Stories, Art & Recipes from Across the African Diaspora, published by 4 Color Books, an imprint of Ten Speed Press. Mr. Terry, who edited and curated BLACK FOOD, receives $10,000 and a specially crafted hand-wrought ladle, an emblem of the prize. The Art of Eating Prize is awarded annually to the author of the year’s best book about food (or food and drink together), focusing on a single title.

“Numerous books of this kind have been published in the last few years, and this one outshines them all, particularly because of Bryant’s acute vision of bringing together a mix of voices and people who form this distinct, yet loose definition of Black Food.”— Art of Eating Prize judge Edward Lee

As much a joyful celebration of Black culture as a cookbook, BLACK FOOD explores the interweaving of food, experience, and community through original poetry and essays. With contributions from more than 100 Black cultural luminaires from around the globe, the book moves through chapters exploring parts of the Black experience, from Homeland to Migration, Spirituality to Black Future, offering delicious recipes, moving essays, and arresting artwork.

Our congratulations to Mr. Terry, the 4 Color Books team, and everyone at Ten Speed Press.
