Product Safety

Penguin Random House LLC shares the desire of our customers, business partners, and the end users of our products to know with confidence that each and every product we sell is safe for its intended use.

Our books are made of non-hazardous materials and comply with all applicable U.S. product safety laws.  Certain materials, including paper, conventional adhesives, non-metal binding materials and non-lead-based inks are completely exempt from the requirements of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA); therefore, any book containing solely those materials is also exempt from the testing and certification requirements of CPSIA.  Notwithstanding this, our policy is to restrict lead in inks, paper, adhesives and bindings so that they are well below the lead limits established by CPSIA.

With regard to books intended for children 12 and under, our products meet or exceed applicable U.S. product safety laws.  For any of our children’s products that contain toys or toy elements, those elements are risk-assessed, and safety tested for such things as choking hazards and toxicity, including the lead and phthalates provisions of CPSIA.

Our practice is to not add restricted phthalates to our books.  Additionally, our manufacturers do not intentionally add PFAS to our books.
