#FridayReads: Anna Dewdney

friday reads llama llamaWhen we read books with children, we share other worlds, and even more importantly, we share ourselves.  Reading with children makes an intimate, human connection that teaches that child what it means to be alive as one of many beings on the planet.

These are the sentiments Anna Dewdney expressed in her essay “How Books Can Teach Your Child to Care.” Anna tragically passed away this week at the age of fifty after a battle with brain cancer. Dewdney was a passionate educator and strong advocate for literacy. In addition to being an author of many favorite children’s books, including the popular Llama Llama series, she also illustrated numerous other children’s stories. She was force in the world of children’s literature that will be greatly missed. In lieu of a funeral service, she asked that people read to a child instead. Therefore, our FridayReads suggestions are an arrangement of Anna Dewdney’s books that we strongly encourage you to read with a child this weekend in her honor and memory.
