Drum Roll: PYR, RHCB, PRH Audio ‘22 ALA Youth Media Award Honorees, Part 2

The American Library Association customarily begins each new year by organizing and hosting the presentation of numerous of literary and cultural awards and citations which recognize excellence in the previous year’s picture, Children’s, and young adult books and audios, across a variety of categories and genres. As previously reported, Kyle Lukoff’s TOO BRIGHT TO SEE and WONDER WALKERS by Micha Archer received Newbery and Caldecott Honors, respectively, and Malinda Lo and Lisa Fipps were named winners of Michael L. Printz Honors for LAST NIGHT AT THE TELEGRAPH CLUB and STARFISH.

Presenting a 2022 tidal wave of Penguin Random House‘s American Library Association Youth Media Award recipients:

Odyssey Honor Audiobooks
Recognizing excellence in children’s and young adult audiobooks.

Penguin Random House Audio titles previously have earned twenty Odyssey Honors and five Odyssey Awards.

Coretta Scott King Book Honor
Recognizing outstanding African American books for children and young adults.

  • HOME IS NOT A COUNTRY by Safia Elhillo (Make Me A World, Listening Library, narrated by Safia Elhillo and Christopher Myers)

Coretta Scott King Award Book Illustrator Honor
Recognizing outstanding African American illustrators of books for children and young adults, which demonstrate an appreciation of African American culture and human value.

  • NINA: A Story of Nina Simone Illustrated by Christian Robinson. Written by Traci N. Todd (Putnam Books for Young Readers, Listening Library, narrated by Jade Wheeler).

Pura Belpre Award Author Honor and Pura Belpre Award Illustrator Honor
Recognizing a Latino/Latina author and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth.

  • DE AQUI COMO EL ACQUI, written and illustrated by Nomar Perez and translated by Farrah Perez (Dial Books for Young Readers, Random House Audio, narrated by Almarie Guerra)

Stonewall Mike Morgan & Larry Romans Children’s and Young Adult Literature Award Honor
Recognizing exceptional merit relating to the LGBTQIA+ experience.

  • ALMOST FLYING by Jake Maia Arlow (Dial Books for Young Readers, Listening Library, narrated by Em Grosland)
  • TOO BRIGHT TO SEE by Kyle Lukoff (Dial Books for Young Readers, Listening Library, narrated by Jax Jackson and Kyle Lukoff)
  • LAST NIGHT AT THE TELEGRAPH CLUB by Malinda Lo (Dutton Books for Young Readers, Listening Library, narrated by Emily Woo Zeller)

Margaret A. Edwards Award
Honoring an author, as well as a specific body of work, for significant and lasting contribution to young adult literature
A.S. King, author of PLEASE IGNORE VERA DIETZ (Ember), and other books.

Sydney Taylor Body-of-Work Award
Jane Yolen, author of more than 400 books for children and young adults, including THE DEVIL’S ARITHMETIC (Puffin), is recognized for her significant contribution to the genre of Jewish children’s literature.

Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement
Nikki Grimes, whose fifty-plus books include the Coretta Scott King Award-winning BRONX MASQUERADE (Dial Books for Young Readers/Speak), is recognized for her literary career.
