On Tuesday, June 30, the Crown Publishing Group announced the establishment of an annual grant of up to $40,000 to support journalism in the public interest and independent creators whose work shines a light on issues of social concern.
Grants will be awarded on a rolling basis to authors whose works are submitted to Crown for publication, with recipients to be selected by a committee of editors representing each of the division’s imprints.

The recipient of the inaugural 2026 Crown Grant is George Butler, an award-winning artist who reports on the ground from conflict zones, climate hotspots, and humanitarian crises, using pen, ink, and watercolors to highlight personal stories of resilience by slowing down and going deeper than the headlines. His reportage illustrations have been published by international news outlets including The New York Times, The Times (London), The Guardian, Air Mail, BBC, CNN, Der Spiegel and Granta and are held in the Victoria and Albert (V & A) Museum as part of the UK’s National Archive.
A TED Fellow and a member of the 2027 Class of Fellows at the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard, Butler is also a grantee of the Pulitzer Center in Crisis Reporting, which has provided funding for his international reportage in critical conflict zones, including Tajikistan, Syria, and Ukraine. He is a founder of Action Syria, an NGO he started in 2014 to support doctors’ and teachers’ salaries in Syria and that has expanded to cover Turkey and Lebanon. To date, Action Syria has raised over £9 million GBP ($11.75 million USD).
Butler has written and published two books: UKRAINE: Remember Also Me: Testimonies from the War (2023) and DRAWN ACROSS BORDERS: True Stories of Human Migration (2021). Additionally, he has collaborated with UK Children’s Laureate Michael Morpurgo on two books, WAR HORSE and WHEN FISHES FLEW.
The Crown Grant will support Butler’s research and reporting for an illustrated book that will tell the human stories behind the headlines of immigrants in America, including the impact of current U.S. immigration policies on individuals, families, and communities across the nation.
Said David Drake, President, Crown Publishing Group, “As an artist and reporter, George Butler exemplifies through his work the vital role that journalists, writers, and artists play in shedding light on critical issues of global concern. We are proud to award George the inaugural Crown Grant, consistent with our mission of supporting and publishing unforgettable storytelling that furthers human connection and expands our understanding of the world.”
