In its April 17 issue, TIME unveiled its annual TIME100, the 2024 list of their selections of the 100 most influential people in the world. The Artists category celebrated two Penguin Random House authors!

James McBride, @ Chia Messina.

James McBride, acclaimed author of last year’s runaway New York Times Bestseller THE HEAVEN & EARTH GROCERY STORE (Riverhead Books), is honored. Of McBride, actor Ethan Hawke observes in the accompanying appreciation, “He writes about deep American wounds with love, rage, and a sense of wit that flies like a falcon in large leaping circles, riding the invisible winds of history.” James McBride also is the author of award-winning THE GOOD LORD BIRD and THE COLOR OF WATER, all published by Riverhead Books.

Also recognized is Lauren Groff, three-time National Book Award finalist and New York Times bestselling author of novels such FATES AND FURIES and MATRIX, as well as short story collections, including FLORIDA, also published by Riverhead Books.

Author Ann Patchett writes of Groff’s dedication to the freedom to read and how it is manifested at her new bookstore, which she owns and runs, in Gainesville, Florida. Patchett, herself a working writer and bookstore owner, recollects, ” When I heard the news, I wanted to stop her. I wanted to praise her. I wanted to tell her there will be days that being both a writer and a bookstore owner will feel like one job too many. Just ask Louise Erdrich, Emma Straub, Judy Blume, Jeff Kinney. Ask me. But the joy of putting the right book into a customer’s hands will make up for everything.”

Congratulations to our authors, and to our thrilled and proud Riverhead colleagues.
