PRH and NCTE Announce Partnership for Two $10,000 Grants for Teachers
Penguin Random House and the National Council of Teachers of English announce a new partnership to recognize the nation’s most dynamic and resourceful teachers who use their creativity to inspire and successfully instill a lifelong love of reading in students. Two teachers will be awarded $10,000 grants to help make their innovative reading programs possible. In addition, honorable mentions will receive book donations for their classrooms from Penguin Random House.
The National Teacher Award for Lifelong Readers will honor a teacher who inspires their students to read all genres of writing while the Maya Angelou Teacher Award for Poetry will honor Ms. Angelou’s legacy by recognizing a teacher who inspires their students to love poetry.
“Teachers are the strength and fabric of our society. Their commitment and passion are essential in opening the world to their students and helping them achieve their goals and pursue their dreams. Through this new partnership with NCTE we are able to go beyond the books we publish and celebrate exceptional teachers with grants that support their critical work,” said Jaci Updike, President, Sales, Penguin Random House.
Open to full and part-time teachers in public schools across the United States, the award application opens March 4, 2019, and the grant recipients will be announced at NCTE’s Annual Convention on November 21, 2019, in Baltimore, Maryland.
“In a profession that must continually evolve to meet the changing demands of literacy education, recognizing and supporting the innovators in our field is essential. These grants can make so many things happen in a teacher’s classroom and community, and we appreciate the generosity of Penguin Random House in making them possible,” said NCTE Executive Director Emily Kirkpatrick. “Shining a light on teachers and approaches that engage students to become readers can have an exponential impact.”
