Doubleday Author Asako Serizawa Wins the 2021 PEN Open Book Award

PEN America announced the winners of its 2021 Literary Awards via a virtual ceremony on Thursday, April 8, with Doubleday author Asako Serizawa winning the PEN Open Book Award for her debut story collection, INHERITORS. This award, which includes a $10,000 cash prize, recognizes an exceptional book-length work of any literary genre by an author of color. Featuring 13 stories that span five generations of a Japanese family fragmented by the Pacific side of World War II, this book also won The Story Prize Spotlight Award earlier this year. Jacqueline Woodson Named Kennedy Center’s Next Education Artist-in-Residence

This week the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts unveiled special 50th Anniversary programming and new initiatives, including naming Penguin Random House author Jacqueline Woodson the Kennedy Center’s next Education Artist-in-Residence. Woodson, winner of the Newbery Honor, National Book Award, Coretta Scott King Award, the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, and MacArthur “Genius” Grant, will begin her residency in January 2022, and be involved with creative programming across multiple genres, forms, and spaces, and seen in both in the Washington, D.C. area and nationally. James McBride First Two-Time Anisfield-Wolf Winner; Samuel Delany Honored for Lifetime Achievement
