Featured Author Events: Ryder Carroll (Brooklyn, Manhattan)

Ryder Carroll is the author of THE BULLET JOURNAL METHOD: Track the Past, Order the Present, Design the Future, on sale from Portfolio today, October 23. Riverhead Approach Focus of Art + Design Conference in Milan, Italy

Can a book jacket design be so iconic and recognizable that it can have a life beyond the book itself? This was the question addressed at an art + design conference, October 19-20, in Milan, Italy by the Riverhead Art Director Helen Yentus and Riverhead Associate Publisher Jynne Dilling Martin. The Italian cultural foundation Mondadori partnered with Mimaster Illustrations to fly Helen and Jynne to Milan, where they spoke to professional illustrators, designers, editors and publishers about the unique Riverhead approach to design. They described how each jacket is created in a collaborative process with publicity and marketing, so it can be carried through a campaign and used across many platforms. The team asked if the design can become the visual “identity” for the book, even when stripped of its text. Dr. Seuss’s THE GRINCH Takes Over Barnes & Noble Stores This Holiday Season

Barnes & Noble, Inc., the world’s largest retail bookseller, has announced that Dr. Seuss’s THE GRINCH will take over its stores this holiday season, with special displays in 536 stores featuring exclusive books, holiday ornaments, puzzles, games and toys starting today, Monday, October 22. B&N’s bookstores around the country will also be hosting a free Grinch Storytime on Saturday, November 3, ahead of the November 9 release of The Grinch movie, based on Dr. Seuss’s timeless book, HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS! CITY OF DOGS Author & Photographer Kick Off NYC Tour In Conversation with Jacqueline Woodson

Ken Foster and photographer Traer Scott kicked off their five-borough tour for CITY OF DOGS: New York Dogs, Their Neighborhoods, and the People Who Love Them, just on-sale from Avery, with a fantastic event at Greenlight Bookstore in Brooklyn. The two were in conversation with fellow Penguin Random House author Jacqueline Woodson, who is featured in the book with her dogs, Toffee and Shadow (you can check out an excerpt of Jacqueline’s chapter on The Bark).

If you missed the Brooklyn CITY OF DOGS event, you can still catch Ken & Traer at Boris & Horton Dog Cafe in the East Village on 10/23, Comic Book Jones in Staten Island and Kew & Willow Books in Kew Gardens on 11/3, or Bronx Barx on 11/4. PRH Creative Writing Awards Alumnus Elizabeth Acevedo NBA Finalist

Elizabeth Acevedo, an alumnus of Penguin Random House’s Creative Writing Awards (CWA), is a finalist for a 2018 National Book Award in the Young People’s Literature category for her book, POET X (Harper Teen), a New York Times bestseller. Elizabeth was the recipient of a 2^nd place scholarship award of $5,000 for her poem “Vicious Cycle” in our 2006 CWA program – then called Bertelsmann’s World of Expression Scholarship program. $2.6 million dollars in scholarships have been awarded to New York City high school writers since the program’s inception in 1993.
