#StandWithSalman: Literary Community Rallies in Solidarity of Revered Author

Stand with Salman: Defend the Freedom to Write event, © New York Public Library Live-Stream.

Last Friday, August 19, on a sunny, late summer morning, writers and readers stood in solidarity with Salman Rushdie and advocated for freedom of expression on the steps of The New York Public Library. Stand with Salman, was hosted by Penguin Random House, PEN America, and the NYPL, along with partner organization, House of Speakeasy. Supporters of Rushdie and free speech alike, gathered with signs and held up books; as authors read from Rushdie’s body of work and shared personal memories of the author.

One World is proud to be a home for authors, journalists, and activists who give us new language to understand our past, present, and future. With much at stake in the upcoming election cycle, voters can better understand issues of the day by reading stories about our collective past. To that end, One World is proud to present #Read&Vote, an initiative which offers a curated list of books that examine the health of our society and key ballot issues from some of today’s leading thinkers, like Ibram X. Stand With Salman Rushdie This Friday

In the wake of the attack on Salman Rushdie, Penguin Random House, along with PEN America and The New York Public Library, will come together with friends, supporters, and members of the literary community to read selected texts from Rushdie’s body of work.

This Friday, August 19, join Penguin Random House and our long-standing partners as we stand in solidarity with our author and in ardent support of freedom of expression. To be held on the steps of the NYPL, the event will also be livestreamed so people around the world can show their support.

Farewell From the 2022 Summer Intern Class

Our cohort had a wonderful summer interning at Penguin Random House, exploring 31 different departments and connecting with colleagues from every possible publishing path.

HR led an engaging series of virtual events throughout the summer, including a Networking Night, 1:1 Career Planning Sessions, and a Summer Sit Down with CEO, Madeline McIntosh. Who Was? History Bee Trivia Competition For Kids is Back!

Penguin Young Readers is relaunching the Who Was? History Bee Competition, an annual trivia competition for kids in the 3rd-5th grades. More than 25,000 students from 49 states participated in the last Who Was? History Bee, hosted in 2020, which named 10 regional finalists champions. This time around, Penguin Young Readers is thrilled to offer students the opportunity to test their history skills in a reinvented experience designed to take full advantage of the digital space.

Melissa Bank, Viking author of ‘The Girls’ Guide to Hunting and Fishing,’ dies at 61

Melissa Bank, author of the beloved, hugely bestselling The Girls’ Guide to Hunting and Fishing and The Wonder Spot, published by Viking in 1999 and 2005, respectively, died in East Hampton, New York, on August 2, at 61. The cause was lung cancer.

Bank, who lived in Long Island and New York City, was a writer with a distinctive minimalist style and boldly hilarious voice. She captivated generations of readers with her warmly piercing takes on relationships, family and adulthood in her two popular and critically acclaimed works of fiction, which were reprinted as Penguin Paperbacks.
