Friday Reads: Golden Globes Books

Nominations for the 76th annual Golden Globe Awards were announced on Thursday morning, December 6th, from the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Two Tana French Novels Adapted for DUBLIN MURDERS TV Series

Tana French’s first two novels, IN THE WOODS and THE LIKENESS (both bestsellers published by Viking/Penguin), are being adapted into an eight-episode television crime drama series, Dublin Murders, to air on Starz in 2019. Starz acquired U.S. and Canadian broadcast rights from Freemantle. Production is underway in Belfast and Dublin. Killian Scott (C.B. Strike) and Sarah Greene (Penny Dreadful) lead the cast as detectives Rob Reilly and Cassie Maddox, central characters in French’s Dublin Murder Squad series. Continue reading →

NPR Celebrates 25 Years of Riverhead

NPR’s Selected Shorts partnered with Symphony Space to host a memorable evening honoring 25 years of Riverhead Books on Wednesday, November 28. An assortment of Broadway actors read aloud six different short stories, and some of Riverhead’s marquis authors took the stage along with them, including National Book Award winner James McBride, two-time National Book Award finalist Lauren Groff, and story writers Daniel Alarcón and Lesley Nneka Arimah. There’s a Book for That: Hanukkah

This year, Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, began at sundown on Sunday, December 2nd and will last until sundown on Monday, December 10th. Hanukkah is Hebrew for “dedication” and commemorates the victory of the Maccabees over the Syrian Greek army, the re-dedication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, and restoring its menorah, or lamp. The “miracle” of Hanukkah is that only one vial of oil was found with just enough oil to illuminate the Temple lamp for one day, and yet it lasted for eight full days. Riverhead’s Courtney Young Goes to Amsterdam for Dutch Foundation for Literature Fellowship

Last month, Riverhead Executive Editor Courtney Young spent a week in Amsterdam as part of a fellowship hosted by the Dutch Foundation for Literature. The fellowship was intended to introduce English-language nonfiction editors to the publishing market in the Netherlands and build relationships between Dutch, English, and American publishers. Courtney joined nine editors from the UK – including Penguin Random House UK editors Jack Ramm from Viking, Sarah Rigby from Hutchinson, and Laura Stickney from Penguin Press – for visits to bookstores, publishers, and art galleries, where they networked and heard mini-lectures on art, philosophy, history, politics, and science. Remembering George H.W. Bush: 1924 – 2018

People around the world are mourning the passing of George H.W. Bush, the 41st President of the United States, who died on Friday, November 30, at the age of 94, at his home in Houston, Texas. His last words – “I love you, too” – were spoken to his son, George W. Bush, the 43rd President, author 41: A PORTRAIT OF MY FATHER, among other books. He announced the death of his “dear dad” Friday night, saying, “George H.W. Bush was a man of the highest character and the best dad a son or daughter could ask for. The entire Bush family is deeply grateful for 41’s life and love, for the compassion of those who have cared and prayed for dad, and for the condolences of our friends and fellow citizens.” Continue reading →
