There’s a Book for That: Woodstock!

It’s a special week in our cultural history – Woodstock turns 50! The legendary music festival was held August 15–18, 1969. Billed as “an Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music” it was held at Max Yasgur’s 600-acre dairy farm in Bethel, New York and attracted an audience of more than 400,000 to hear Jimi Hendrix, Joan Baez, The Grateful Dead, Crosby, Stills Nash & Young and The Who, to name a handful. As Joni Mitchell said, “Woodstock was a spark of beauty” where half-a-million kids “saw that they were part of a greater organism.” If you were there, then you have your own story to tell and relive! Friday Reads: Walden

Today marks the 165th anniversary of the publication of Henry David Thoreau’s seminal memoir WALDEN, OR A LIFE IN THE WOODS. Published by Ticknor and Fields in 1854, WALDEN details Thoreau’s experiences over the course of two years, two months, and two days in a cabin he built near Walden Pond amidst woodland owned by his friend and mentor Ralph Waldo Emerson, near Concord, Massachusetts. It’s been noted that Thoreau spent almost four times as long on the WALDEN manuscript as he spent at the cabin. How a Harpist Became a Novelist: She Wrote About What She Loved

This week’s Igloo Book Buzz selection is ELLIE AND THE HARPMAKER, a debut novel by Hazel Prior, published on August 6 by Berkley. Prior is a harpist based in Exmoor, England. Originally from Oxford, she fell in love with the harp as a student and now performs regularly. After placing some of her short stories in literary magazines, Prior says, “I knew I’d only manage to write a whole novel if I wrote about what I loved, what would keep me passionately inspired and involved. So I wrote about harps. I wrote about the countryside. I wrote about characters who don’t quite fit in, who long for fulfillment and expression; who battle with all sorts of problems but, in the end, find the freedom to be themselves.” Continue reading →

A Farewell from Your 2019 Summer Interns

When my plane touched down in New York City two months ago, the only thing that calmed my beating heart was the reminder that I was on my way to the internship of a lifetime. Within 24 restive hours, I had my first flight, first cab ride, first subway ride, first real slice of NYC pizza, and first truly professional experience. With trepidation, I entered 1745 Broadway doe-eyed, revering the literary world and wanting desperately to break into it. I never expected such a warm reception from every person here at PRH and feel honored to have been privy to such a vast source of knowledge.
