Featured Author Event: Vanessa Hua (San Francisco)

Colleagues in the Bay Area are invited to experience a celebration of diverse new literary voices. Vanessa Hua, San Francisco Chronicle columnist and author of the debut novel, A RIVER OF STARS (Ballantine), will be featured on a “Diverse Voices in Publishing” panel at Book Passage in San Francisco on Wednesday, August 29. Other panelists include Riverhead author R. O. Kwon (THE INCINDIARIES) and Doubleday author Ingrid Rojas Contreras (FRUIT OF THE DRUNKEN TREE). Also joining for this evening event will be authors Crystal Hana Kim and Lillian Li. Beginning at 7:00 p.m., the writers will each read from their debut novels, examining identity, family, and more. Susan Kamil on the Enduring Resonance of GUERNSEY and the Novel’s Netflix Film Adaptation

Structured as a series of letters, this beloved novel quickly became a #1 New York Times bestseller and a book club favorite. Fast forward to this summer, when Netflix released a film adaptation of GUERNSEY. Rave reviews have been rolling in, sparking renewed interest in the book, with Dial publishing a movie tie-in edition that has returned the title to the New York Times bestseller list.

Worldcon Report: A Great Year for DAW at the 2018 Hugo Awards

This year’s Worldcon, held August 16 – 20, in San Jose, California, was capped by the Hugos, the premier sci-fi and fantasy book awards. And it was a great year for DAW. Sheila E. Gilbert, DAW Co-Publisher and Vice President, won her second Hugo in the Best Editor–Long Form category. There’s a Book for That: Elephants

August seems to be the month of the elephant. August 12^th was World Elephant Day, an auspicious birthdate for Zuli, a healthy male African elephant born that day to his mother “Ndlula” at San Diego’s Wild Animal Park. Science has taught us that elephants are some of the most intelligent, social and empathic animals around. Elephants’ captivity is controversial, but conservation is a concern. This week, Carl Zimmer (SHE HAS HER MOTHER’S LAUGH) wrote in The New York Times about research showing elephants protect themselves with a unique gene that fights cancer which may help treatment in humans.
