Featured Author Event: Neil MacGregor

Attention colleagues in New York and Washington, D.C: Neil MacGregor, former head of the British Museum (and author of the bestselling A History of the World in 100 Objects, and the recent Germany: Memories of a Nation) will be discussing his beautifully illustrated new book, LIVING WITH THE GODS: On Beliefs and Peoples (Knopf, Oct. 30) at special events next week in NYC and DC. On Monday (10/29), MacGregor appears at the Morgan Library & Museum (225 Madison Avenue), with his talk to begin at 6:30 p.m. On Thursday (11/1), he will be at The Smithsonian (S. DUNGEONS & DRAGONS ART & ARCANA: A Visual History, published on October 23 by Ten Speed Press, is an illustrated guide to the history and evolution of the iconic role-playing game told through the paintings, sketches, illustrations, and visual ephemera behind its creation, growth, and continued popularity. The superstar author team of Michael Witwer, Kyle Newman, Jon Peterson and Sam Witwer created the most comprehensive collection of D&D imagery ever assembled. There are more than 700 pieces of artwork—from each edition of the core role-playing books, supplements, and adventures; as well as Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance novels; decades of Dragon and Dungeon magazines; and classic advertisements and merchandise; plus never-before-seen sketches, large-format canvases, rare photographs, one-of-a-kind drafts.

Riverhead Approach Focus of Art + Design Conference in Milan, Italy

Can a book jacket design be so iconic and recognizable that it can have a life beyond the book itself? This was the question addressed at an art + design conference, October 19-20, in Milan, Italy by the Riverhead Art Director Helen Yentus and Riverhead Associate Publisher Jynne Dilling Martin. The Italian cultural foundation Mondadori partnered with Mimaster Illustrations to fly Helen and Jynne to Milan, where they spoke to professional illustrators, designers, editors and publishers about the unique Riverhead approach to design. They described how each jacket is created in a collaborative process with publicity and marketing, so it can be carried through a campaign and used across many platforms. The team asked if the design can become the visual “identity” for the book, even when stripped of its text. Barnes & Noble, Inc., the world’s largest retail bookseller, has announced that Dr. Seuss’s THE GRINCH will take over its stores this holiday season, with special displays in 536 stores featuring exclusive books, holiday ornaments, puzzles, games and toys starting today, Monday, October 22. B&N’s bookstores around the country will also be hosting a free Grinch Storytime on Saturday, November 3, ahead of the November 9 release of The Grinch movie, based on Dr. Seuss’s timeless book, HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS!
