Knopf to Publish Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Debut Children’s Picture Book in September 2023

Alfred A. Knopf will publish MAMA’S SLEEPING SCARF, the debut children’s picture book by bestselling author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, writing as Nwa Grace James, and illustrated by Joelle Avelino, on September 5, 2023. The announcement was made by Knopf EVP and Publisher Reagan Arthur. US rights were acquired from Sarah Chalfant at the Wylie Agency. The book will be published in hardcover and ebook formats, and as an audiobook, by Penguin Random House. Continue reading →

Tonight: Ibram X. Kendi, Nikole Hannah-Jones, Nic Stone Headline Banned Books Virtual Event

According to a recent New York Times piece, the American Library Association received an “‘unprecedented’ 330 reports of book challenges” last fall, and the executive director of the National Coalition Against Censorship “has not seen this level of challenges since the 1980s.” From Tennessee to Texas, book banning continues to make headlines across the United States. Facing threats of censorship and losing diverse perspectives, parents, teachers, and librarians are all asking the question, “When books are threatened, where do we turn?”

Join us tonight, Tuesday, March 29, from 7:30 PM – 9:00 PM (ET) for a night of virtual programming in partnership with PEN America dedicated to examining this pressing question. The evening will feature a conversation between Ibram X. Kendi (How To Be An Antiracist), Nikole Hannah-Jones (The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story), and Nic Stone (Dear Martin), moderated by Dr. Emily Knox, associate professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign School of Information Sciences. Elliott’s INVISIBLE CHILD Wins the 2022 Lukas Book Prize, Keefe’s EMPIRE OF PAIN a Finalist

The Columbia Journalism School and the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard announced the four winners and two finalists for its 2022 J. Anthony Lukas Prize Project Awards on Wednesday, March 16. Random House author Andrea Elliott earned the $10,000 J. Anthony Lukas Book Prize for her first book, INVISIBLE CHILD: Poverty, Survival & Hope in an American City. The prize acknowledges examples of nonfiction writing that represent the literary grace and dedication to extensive research on topics of American political or social concern and original reporting that characterized the distinguished work of the awards’ namesake, J. Anthony Lukas, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author who died in 1997. This year’s awards ceremony will take place on Tuesday, May 3, at the Columbia Journalism School.
