Behind the Book (BtB), a longtime partner of Penguin Random House, joined Pulitzer-prize winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones and Newbery Honor winner Renée Watson, co-authors of The 1619 Project: Born on the Water (Kokila/Penguin Young Readers), for an all-school author event at P.S. 125, The Ralph Bunche School in Harlem in late February. Six classes of 3-5th grade students, 110 in total, took part in this special event focused on this important book, which provides a pre-colonial context for Black history, while also exploring the horrific realities of slavery and the resiliency and contributions of Black Americans. New York Times bestselling author Sabaa Tahir pivots in a new direction with her just published Young Adult novel, ALL MY RAGE, released by Razorbill on Tuesday, March 1. Inspired by Tahir’s childhood memories of growing up at her family’s motel in the Mojave Desert and being seen as “different,” the novel is told through the lens of two best friends, Noor and Salahudin, that grow up as social outcasts looking for a way out of the harsh and isolating world around them. ALL MY RAGE explores the lasting effects of intergenerational trauma and how far those affected are required to go to leave the effects behind; the novel also addresses themes of cultural identity, family, forgiveness, love, and loss. Welcome March and Women’s History Month. In 1987, Congress designated the month of March “Women’s History Month.” In President Biden’s proclamation, he states: “During Women’s History Month, let us honor the accomplished and visionary women who have helped build our country, including those whose contributions have not been adequately recognized and celebrated. And let us pay tribute to the trailblazers from the recent and distant past for daring to envision a future for which no past precedent existed, and for building a Nation of endless possibilities for all of its women and girls.”
