Cantú, Makkai, Braithwaite Win L.A. Times Book Prizes, PRHPS Client Receives Innovator’s Award

The Los Angeles Times announced the winners its 39th annual Book Prizes, including three titles published by Penguin Random House imprints, on Friday, April 12, at the University of Southern California, preceding last weekend’s Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. Library of America, a Penguin Random House Publisher Services client, was honored with the Innovator’s Award, which spotlights efforts to bring books, publishing and storytelling into the future. Protect our Planet! Earth Day, Monday, April 22, marks nearly 50 years since millions of people took to the streets to protest industrial pollution on April 22, 1970. In July of that year, the Environmental Protection Agency was created and now Earth Day is a global event with 192 countries participating. The International Association of Culinary Professionals announced the finalists of its prestigious IACP awards, recognizing the very best food writing and publishing of the year, from cookbooks and journalism to photography and digital media. We received 23 nominations for books, authors and editors from Alfred A. Friday Reads: Black Holes

Have you seen it? Astronomers have captured an image of a black hole: a cosmic abyss so deep and dense that not even light can escape it. The first breathtaking image, in a galaxy about 55 million light-years from Earth, was unveiled on Wednesday, April 9 – the result of an international collaboration involving 200 members and nine telescopes.

According to Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, in a black hole matter, space and time come to an end. As far as the team of astronomers can tell, the shape of the shadow is circular, as Einstein’s theory predicts.
